Which Lightweight Double Pushchair Should You Buy?

A lightweight double pushchair is easy to move around, especially when you have children of various age groups. They are easy to fold, steer and transport up and down the stairs.

This City Mini GT2 features side-by-side seating with plenty of legroom. It also has adjustable reclining, UPF 50+ canopy, and windows that peek out. It also features a smart frame that can expand in width to accommodate a second seat and a compatible car seat(s).

Side-by-Side

The majority of the light double pushchairs that we tested were side-by-side models. These are best for children who can sit and stand double stroller without assistance, since they tend to lack car seat compatibility. That said there are some exceptions. Thule Urban Glide 2 Double and Baby Trend Sit 'N Stand Double are both top choices that have adjustable recline in both seats, a large canopy, and padded five-point harnesses. They're also easy to move despite their bigger footprint and are perfect for parents worried about fitting through doorways.

The Cybex Duet is a little different due to its unique frame that expands in width to accommodate an additional seat, making it slimmer than other pushchairs with side-by-side seating on the market. It is able to pass through doors that are standard and is easy to maneuver in public transport. It is also a jogger which is great for those who plan to use it in conjunction with an infant car seat or a baby carrier.

The UPPAbaby Vista v2 double is another fantastic side-by-side double that is lightweight. It allows for an even greater degree of customization due to a modular frame. It has a smart design that lets you convert it into a single buggy or a double by adding two car seats or carrycots (it can even accommodate twins). It's a good option for growing families. The UPPAbaby umbrella stroller is also one of the lightest, sexiest and most stylish available.

If you're looking for a compact lightweight double, try the egg2 which folds to the size of a compact suitcase. It can be used either as a double or a single by adding two baby car seats or carrycots. Our test subjects were awed by how easy it was to move around, even with a full load of kids.

Side-by-side lightweight double pushchairs aren't 100% foolproof, howeverIf your children are at the same age or at the same stage, they might be fighting over who is allowed to ride in which seat. If they're at different heights, then the tandem model could be the best option for them, since it allows them to face eachother.

Tandem

While side-byside models are more suitable for siblings with similar age, tandem lightweight double strollers have their own appeal. They can take a bigger car seat, and some have convertible seats or an additional carrycot that is located in the middle. They tend to be more spacious and simple to access and exit from the baskets, though they are usually smaller than those on single buggies. They also have larger big canopies with windows that peek out and a parent cup holder and cushioned leg cushions for the children.

The iCandy Peach tandem is another good example of a lightweight tandem that provides an excellent value. Its fabric feels a bit less premium than some of our other top-rated doubles but it still looks and feels great and is easy to use. Its one-handed folding is impressive. Although it takes some time to master, Kirstie from our Lab described it as "genius". It's not foldable with the carrycot attached, but the mechanism for attaching and removing it is simple and fast.

Tandem lightweight double strollers will generally have a more precise turning compared to side-byside models. However, they could be harder to drive on uneven surfaces or curbs. They may also be slightly slower to pick up speed and are heavier to move, which could cause strain on your back.

Another option is a convertible double buggy that starts out as an individual and then you can add adapters that turn it into a double. They can include an additional seat, a carrycot, or both in the front. The children can be seated together. Some of them also offer the option of incorporating buggy boards, which could help an older child keep up with a younger sibling.

The Uppababy Vista V2 is a great example of a convertible, as it can also convert into a twin buggy from birth pram with the purchase of additional cocoons (PS59 each) which create a lay-flat space for newborns. They can be placed on top of each other or positioned to one another and you can use them with the baby car seat that comes with the pushchair (as as long as you choose the right one). Single-to-Double

This lightweight double buggy was designed for outdoor-loving family who are looking to upgrade from a single-stroller. It can be transformed into a jogger by acquiring kits that include air-filled tires as well as all-wheel suspension. It is also a good option for twins or children from different age groups, and as a triple tandem, it can handle rough terrain. It's also a great choice for parents who want an elegant design that's just as sleek as a single and is available in a range of fabric colours.

We loved the way that this iCandy model folds up with a one-handed mechanism that's really easy to master. The wheels and suspension of these types of strollers are generally good at coping with surfaces that are paved. They're also lighter than many side-bysides, so you can still get a lot of storage. It's important to remember that these strollers aren't as good at navigating narrow aisles in supermarkets and aren't able to cope with a lot of shopping. Although it's much easier to turn the stroller around on a narrow curved path, this can be a problem. Some are also more easy to turn than others, with the Thule Urban Glide 2 Double and Baby Trend Sit N' Stand Double, for instance.

Convertible

Convertible double pushchairs are fantastic because they can be adjusted to the changing needs of a family. They often start out as single buggies and come with adapters to add an additional seat, carrycot or (in certain cases) the car seat to the frame. Some can be converted to a single when your child's older age begins to walk or prefers to ride a buggyboard.

One of the lightest double strollers on our list, this stylish tri-fold model can hold children up to 40 lbs each. It comes with an easy-to-use basket between the seats to store things. The large canopy with a peekaboo window, multi-position reclining seats as well as front and back suspensions to ensure smoother rides on rough terrain were praised by the home testers. It also has a convenient parent cup holder, and an enormous easy-to-access basket. They also noted that the backs have small double buggy pockets, that are just sufficient to hold the phone and keys.

This light, high-end side-byside is available in more than 20 configurations. It also comes with a second seat and carrycot. Its impressive set of features includes a handlebar with a high-profile design for easier steering as well as rear and front suspensions to smooth rough terrain; a self-standing, compact fold with handy straps for easy schlepping; and seven-inch wheel lock that swivels in the front and 10-inch back wheels with suspension for a smoother ride. The only downside is that you'll have to buy a separate baby carrier or car seat.

This versatile tandem is a popular choice from our home testers due to its easy-to-maneuver size and impressively large shopping basket, which is accessible with both seats in the parent-facing position. It is a breeze to maneuver due to its low weight (about the weight of a few single pushchairs). Many users praise the clever method of attaching the second seat or riding board to the back. Parents also loved the fact that it can accommodate infant carriers and car seats from a variety of brands. This includes some that are not normally compatible with other double buggies.
